Overview

Agenda Item: Open Agenda

Details

Welcome to the HCC: the Soviet-Afghan War Where geopolitics, ideology, and resistance collide, and every decision shapes the fate of a nation. The Historical Crisis Committee on the Soviet–Afghan War explores one of the most pivotal and complex conflicts of the late Cold War era. Beginning in 1979, the Soviet Union's military intervention in Afghanistan triggered a decade-long struggle that reshaped regional politics, fueled international rivalries, and left lasting consequences still visible today. In this committee, delegates will find themselves at the intersection of global strategy, ideological competition, and local resistance. The crisis will revolve around key actors including the Soviet leadership, the Afghan communist government, various Mujahideen factions, and foreign powers whose covert involvement escalated the conflict into a proxy battleground.
